In a world brimming with talented musicians, Natalie Shay stands out as a remarkable young artist on the precipice of stardom. Hailing from London, this singer-songwriter has captivated audiences with her soulful voice, infectious melodies, and honest lyricism. With a string of successful releases and an impressive list of accolades, Shay has proven that she is a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.
When we sat down with Natalie during the SXSW music festival last March, we met a passionate, thoughtful, and driven individual whose dedication towards her career is a clear indicator of her steady rise to popularity and success. Natalie is an artist with strategy. She intends to build a career that lasts. In our conversations with Natalie, however, we learned that her story has many surprising elements that have equipped her for the career that she nurtures so well today.
Natalie began her life with a love for music. She is a classically trained guitarist and began performing musical theater (a pass-time she still considers to be one of her greatest passions) when she was just 4 years old. By the time she was 10, inspired by a Taylor Swift concert that she attended, Natalie began writing and (a few short years thereafter) performing her own music at various venues across London. When she was 14, Natalie began her studies at The Brit school, a prestigious musical school sponsored by The British Industry Trust, that boasts an impressive alumni including Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Tom Holland. At the Brit School, Natalie learned the ins and outs of the Music industry. She received formal training on how to market herself, prepare for releases, manage legal contracts and many other important tasks often missing from the traditional education of modern musicians.
Natalie’s advice for other artists, beyond educating themselves and building a good team is to stay consistent to your own brand and what you personally value about your own work. For Natalie, this is her persistence to play guitar in her shows despite the rarity of live instrumentation amongst other pop musicians in recent years. As she says, trends come and go, and eventually the thing about you that makes you, you will come back around in popularity. Lean into what makes you unique.
Beyond her music business skills, Natalie is an exceptional performer and songwriter. While her lyrics explore deeply relatable and emotional themes, her music is undeniably poppy, energetic and catchy. In her recent single, “The Edge’, for example, Natalie tells the story of a friendship breakup, the heavy emotions surrounding the event and the many things she learned in the aftermath of the incident. The song is a refreshing take on a breakup story given that there are no romantic elements but also in the way that the song is delivered. The passion and pain behind the lyrics are tangible, but the story itself is skilfully wrapped in an upbeat tempo that begs for the listener to get on their feet and move. In this way, Natalie invites the audience to join her in her journey towards catharsis.
